Description

Royal Scotsman - The Classic Tour

Discover the many faces of Scotland. From the Southern Highlands with its varied landscape of great glens, lochs and waterfalls, through Speyside with its spectacular mountain peaks, majestic Caledonian pine forests and heather moorland, to the wild grandeur of the West Highlands and the Isle of Skye with its cloak of mystery, sorrows and romance. The Lowlands offer a colourful contrast of rich arable farmlands and the best golfing country.

DAY 1: The Royal Scotsman departs Edinburgh at 14.10 and heads west on the majestic West Highland Line to Dalmally, where you disembark to visit Inverawe Smokehouse, situated in grand mountain scenery overlooking the lowers reaches of the River Awe. Afterwards the Campbell-Prestons invite you into their home to sample some of the smoked delicacies over a glass of wine. The train stables overnight at the Victorian station of Taynuilt, and after dinner you are entertained in the Observation Car by the accordionist, Paddy Shaw.

DAY 2: The train departs Taynuilt and heads south, through the historic town of Stirling with its magnificent royal castle, on the way to Blair Atholl, where you visit the House of Bruar, Scotland's, most prestigious country store. This afternoon you tour Ballindalloch Castle, the much loved home of the Macpherson-Grants. The train stables overnight at Boat of Garten on the private Strathspey Railway.

DAY 3: The morning is spent in the Highland Wildlife Park, set in 260 acres of beautiful Strathspey. During lunch you head west to Kyle of Lochalsh, on what is arguably the most scenic route in Britain. This afternoon you visit the spectacular Eilean Donan Castle. After dinner Mary Strachan entertains with her clarsach. The train stables overnight in Kyle.

DAY 4: This morning you visit the romantic Isle of Skye, where Lady Claire Macdonald of Macdonald welcomes you to Kinloch Lodge for an exclusive cookery demonstration. During lunch you retrace part of yesterday’s route as far as Inverness before heading east to Keith. This afternoon you visit Strathisla Distillery, and have the opportunity to sample some of the products! Afterwards the train continues south to Aberdeen, the ''Granite City'', then follows the coast through Carnoustie to Perth for overnight stabling.

DAY 5: The train leaves Perth during breakfast this morning, and crosses the Firth of Forth by means of the Forth Railway Bridge. You arrive in Edinburgh at 09.30 where our tour ends. Addresses are exchanged, hugs prolonged, damp eyes dried – but the greatest farewell is reserved for the train and its impeccable crew. All that is missing is a piper playing the lament ''Will ye no come back again?''
