It took 90 years to complete what began in 1901 as a tour designed for railroad executives and financiers to visit the mines of Mexico. Today it is the journey through Mexico”¦s Copper Canyon that the Society of American Travel Writers voted the ”§worlds most exciting train journey.”Ø

What can you expect from a Copper Canyon train journey? Several different companies operate in Copper Canyon and you can choose the company that best suits you, from budget to luxury. Journeys begin in the southern U.S.A. or in Mexico and itineraries usually cover a 3 - 14 day journey north or south.

A typical trip through Copper Canyon might include:

Day 1
ĵ Arrive at your hotel in Los Mochis for a relaxing evening at a lodge. Enjoy spectacular views of the El Fuerte River and this 430-year-old-cobbled-street settlement.

Day 2 and 3
ĵ Transfer to the train depot for a dramatic ascent, 8000 ft., up to the Pacific Palisades. This is the most spectacular segment of the railway, featuring fantastic bridges, tunnels and switchbacks.
ĵ On arrival, transfer to a Wilderness Lodge for two-nights accommodation. Perched on the rim of Copper Canyon or Barranca del Cobre, you will enjoy treks to remote Tarahumara Indian settlements and a rim tour of the Urique Canyon, one of the largest and deepest of the canyons.

Day 4 and 5
ĵ After a morning exploring ancient Indian caves, travel by train to Divisadero. Your lodge features spectacular views of the Copper and Taraecua Canyons.
ĵ On Day 5, take a canyon rim drive for a variety of natural panoramic overlooks of the canyons.

Day 6
ĵ Take a walking tour to a Tarahumara Indian Cave, followed by an afternoon train to Chihuahua City. Overnight in a hotel with a morning transfer to the airport.

Barranca del Cobre ”V Copper Canyon is four times larger than the Grand Canyon! The most stunning views can be seen from the cloud-shrouded town of Pasada Barracas. Climb up over 8000 feet above sea level and ascend by an amazing series of loops and reverse turns through 87 tunnels and 35 bridges.

Encounters with Tarahumara Indians: one of the most ancient cultures in North America. The Tarahumara are known for their legendary running ability, foot races are frequently staged that can last up to 78 hours. More than 50, 000 Tarahumara inhabit the Copper Canyon section of the Sierra Madre Mountains.

Over 290 species of migratory and indigenous birds call the Canyon home during the year.
