ISLAND MOSAIC AN 8-DAY TOUR OF NEWFOUNDLAND, CANADA
This itinerary can be amended to suit the interests of your group
Known as the Island of Easy Smiles, Newfoundland’s irresistible charm, wild beauty and welcoming hospitality will win your hearts and provide life-long memories of an unforgettable land.
Day 01 – to ROCKY HARBOUR, Newfoundland Your eight-day tour begins in Corner Brook where you will meet your deluxe motorcoach for transfer to Rocky Harbour located in Gros Morne National Park, a World Heritage Site set in a magnificent portion of the Long Range Mountains. On an afternoon visit to the Interpretation Centre you’ll learn that this vast park is made up of bogs, sand dunes, flat-topped mountains composed of rare rocks, and deep fjords carved by ancient glaciers. This evening’s Opening Dinner will set the mood for an exhilarating week on “The Rock”. (D)
Day 02 – to LITTLE RAPIDS A morning boardwalk stroll across coastal bogs and low forested limestone ridges will take you to the edge of one of Gros Morne’s unique landlocked fjords. From here you’ll embark on a boat cruise featuring the rugged beauty and fascinating geology of Western Brook Pond bordered by 600-metre cliffs composed of rock a billion years old. Return to Rocky Harbour for a late afternoon transfer to the popular Strawberry Hill Resort in Little Rapids. Enjoy dinner at the resort this evening. (B/D)
Day 03 – to GRAND FALLS Start the day by taking a leisurely hike along one of the beautiful trails on the Strawberry Hill property or an optional helicopter ride to view the inland fjords, crystal lakes and dramatic geological formations from the air. On the other hand you may just want to put your feet up and enjoy the rustic atmosphere of the resort. This afternoon witness the splendor of wilderness lakes, turbulent rapids and shoreline spruce forests on your transfer east to Grand Falls located in the Exploits Valley. (B)
Day 04 - to CLARENVILLE Today is iceberg and whale watching day! Depart Grand Falls and head north, passing by many picturesque fishing villages along the “Road to the Isles”, a series of islands connected by causeways. In the north shore town of Twillingate, a visit to the Long Point Lighthouse will provide the perfect spot to watch for whales and 10,000-year-old icebergs floating through Iceberg Alley. Continue to Terra Nova National Park with a stop at the Interpretation Centre to experience first-hand the variety of marine life found in the park. Within the Centre are a Touch-Tank, live underwater video cameras and video footage, a wet lab and whale and iceberg exhibits. The last leg of today’s journey takes you past rugged coastlands to the town of Clarenville which, like many towns in the area, began as a woodcutters’ camp in the mid 1800’s. (B)
Day 05 – to ST. JOHN’S After a morning visit to Come-By-Chance, the quiet village-turned oil refinery centre, wend your way through the delightful-sounding towns of Heart’s Delight, Heart’s Desire, and finally Heart’s Content for a visit to the Transatlantic Cable Station. Continue past the little fishing villages that dot Conception Bay on your way to the bustling port and provincial capital city of St. John’s. Experience some traditional Newfoundland fare at this evening’s dinner (are you ready for dishes with odd sounding names such as Cod Tongues, Jiggs Dinner and Figgy Duff?) (B/D)
Day 06 – ST. JOHN’S Begin the day with a guided tour of historic St. John’s to include a visit to Signal Hill, the city’s most visible landmark since 1704 when the first signal tower was built for ships sailing into the harbour. This afternoon is free to explore and shop on your own – historical museums, beautiful churches and picturesque parks are just some of your options. This evening enjoy a “George Street Pub Crawl” - if the friendly residents recognize that you’re “from away”, you may be encouraged to kiss a codfish, slug back a shot of “screech” and sing “I’se the B’y” as a welcoming ritual. (B) DAY 07 – ST. JOHN’S A boat cruise to the Witless Bay Islands Ecological Reserve will offer an exciting possibility of encounters with Humpback Whales, puffins and many other exotic seabirds. If luck is with you, an iceberg might even come into view. On your return to St. John’s stops will be made at Petty Harbour where wooden houses cling precariously to the steep hill that rises from the sea and at Cape Spear where the island’s oldest surviving lighthouse overlooks the North Atlantic. Enjoy a traditional maritime serving of succulent lobster at this evening’s Closing Dinner. (B/D)
Day 08 – HOME Today you will take the scenic Marine Drive Tour passing through Logy Bay, Outer Cove, Middle Cove and Torbay to Flat Rock, the site of the famous “Our Lady of Lourdes” Grotto visited by Pope John Paul VI during his North American tour of 1984. The scenery is spectacular with huge cliffs dropping off to the sea, pebbled beaches and coves offering an incomparable ocean view. Time permitting you may continue on to Pouch Cove and Cape St. Francis before returning to St. John’s for your flight home. (B)
Farewell and may you soon return! B - Breakfast / L - Lunch / D - Dinner - denote meals included in tour cost
