The Cork International Choral Festival has taken place every year since 1954. It has over the years gained an extensive reputation as a premier International Choral Festival noted for its excellent organisation, high competitive standards and the friendliness of its welcome. It annually brings together some of the finest amateur choirs of international standing who perform both competitively and non-competitively in Cork's City Hall (capacity 1,200) - one of the most attractive and acoustically superb venues in Ireland. Large and knowledgeable audiences attend the evening Gala Concerts and daytime competitive sessions. The Festival serves as a meeting place for choirs from different countries and backgrounds, a place where past experiences are shared and new experiences gained. As well as foreign choirs, the Festival annually features over 100 adult, youth and school choirs who participate in national competitions. Overall, the Festival attracts some 5,500 participants. The Festival Fringe ensures that choral music of the highest standard and representative of many traditions, together with spectacular displays of folk-dancing by Irish and foreign dancers, is brought both to the people of Cork and the many visitors who travel to the city for the event. |
